Award Winning Catford House
- CATFORD’S OLDEST SURVIVING BUILDING DATING TO 1736
- COMPLEX HERITAGE REFURBISHMENT
- AWARD-WINNING PUBLIC & COMMUNITY BUILDING
Project Overview
Claremont delivered the £4.25m refurbishment and extension of the former Catford Constitutional Club, transforming a deteriorating historic building into a new pub, community kitchen and meeting space at the heart of Catford.
Dating back in part to 1736, the building combines Georgian, Victorian and later additions, creating a complex existing structure that required extensive repair, adaptation and careful integration of new construction.
The completed scheme brings an important local landmark back into public use while supporting the wider regeneration of Catford town centre.
Preserving Almost 300 Years Of History
Rather than concealing the building’s evolution, the project celebrates it. Historic brickwork, retained walls, stitched repairs and previous interventions remain visible alongside carefully introduced new elements.
The imperfections become visible veins of the building’s history, revealing almost 300 years of adaptation rather than erasing it. Old and new sit deliberately side by side, allowing each generation of Catford House to remain legible while giving the building an entirely new purpose.
Managing The Challenges
Years of alteration and deterioration had created a complex mix of structures and conditions, with further challenges becoming apparent as the building was opened up.
Claremont worked collaboratively with the project team to retain and repair the existing fabric while integrating the new construction. Historic brickwork was carefully repaired and a substantial new internal timber structure introduced within the Georgian section, stabilising the existing building while creating the striking triple-height central space.
